PATRON is an open source (AGPL-3.0) AI platform for law firms that runs on the lawyer's own machine instead of the vendor's cloud: it analyses case files, labels the source behind every answer, and keeps an audit trail verifiable without trusting the maker.
PATRON is built on the premise that a client's file does not leave the firm's hardware. You can plug in your own model, including a local one, and the matter then runs fully offline. Every claim in an answer carries a source label in one of three classes: quote, paraphrase, or no basis in the documents. The history of work with the model goes into a ledger bound by a SHA-256 hash chain with a Merkle tree per RFC 6962, which an auditor checks offline, without access to the firm's database and without reading the case file. The program is free, the code is open, and it ships alongside a catalogue of 45 connectors to public legal sources across 34 countries and EU law.
Technical facts
Three differentiators
The file stays on the hardware. There is no intermediary the documents pass through. With a local model a matter can run with no network connection at all, which for professional secrecy is an architectural difference rather than a clause in the terms.
The answer shows where it comes from. Every claim gets a label: a quote with a page number, a paraphrase, or no basis in the documents. The third class matters most, because it is what separates a tool from an oracle.

If you are writing a round-up
Most AI round-ups for lawyers compare cloud tools against each other. The "local-first / on-premise" category usually does not appear in them, even though it is the first question a firm bound by professional secrecy asks: where do the case files physically sit while they are being analysed.
If you want to add that column, the criterion is checkable without our involvement. The question is whether the tool still works once you cut off its internet, and whether that can be verified in the code. The answer "we have encryption and a DPA" does not address it.
